Rebuilding Haiti's Universities

I just learned of a very interesting potential connection between Crusade in the Northeast and Haiti. Since the January earthquake, Crusade has been engaged in relief efforts, sending volunteers, money, and food. Students are well on the way to donating 1 million meals during our Big Break outreaches in Florida this month. But there's another important connection: during the earthquake most of the infrastructure of Haiti's University system collapsed, and many faculty and students were killed. Click here to read more on the devastation of Haiti's Universities.

Kurt, who I work with in the Northeast Field Office, has close ties with a relief organization that works in Haiti. He will be traveling there next week with a team of Campus Crusade National Staff to explore the possibility of bringing our ministry resources to bear to rebuild Haiti's University system. This would potentially involve students and staff volunteering to clean up and build, and collegiate faculty partners volunteering their time to teach in Haiti, so that much-needed labor and professional skills can continue to be made available.

Perhaps the most exciting thing in all of this is the potential for Christians and non-Christians to work together to bring life and meaning in the midst of devastation. As was true in our Katrina relief efforts, there is sure to be tremendous opportunity for spiritual dialogue!
